What to Bring for Whale Watching

Preparation for Your Whale Watching Adventure

By choosing Harbor Breeze Cruises for your whale watching experience, you are choosing a company with more than 18 years of experience and are committed to providing the best whale watching experience available in Southern California. However, here are a few tips that will help make your whale watching excursion the best possible.

Dress Appropriately – Even during the summer months, it can get a little chilly on the Pacific Ocean. Bring along a light jacket or sweatshirt just in case it does get a little cold and windy on the seas. You don’t want your experience to be dampened because you were cold. It is also a good idea to wear shoes with a good rubber sole not only for comfort but traction. Additionally, bring along a pair of sunglasses to help reduce glare off the water.

Bring Sunscreen – Since our whale watching excursions last from two to three hours, that means a lot of time out in the sun. While the temperatures may be cooler, this only increases the possibility of getting burned since you don’t notice it.

Seasickness - If you have a tendency to get seasick, it might be a good idea to take some form of remedy before you board. It is also a good idea to have something in your stomach. While we have a fully stocked snack bar, taking along saltine crackers or ginger snaps might help settle your stomach. While the trips are smooth, the slightest movement on the water can be a problem for some. It is better to be overly prepared than green around the gills later.

Cameras - Make sure to bring along a video or still camera to document your adventure. You will have numerous opportunities to get some excellent photos and video of whales, dolphins and other marine life. If you have a film camera, make sure you have enough film for the trip. Make sure that your digital still cameras have been charged and that you have enough memory on your card to take as many photos as possible. Charge the batteries on your video camera and bring an extra one if possible.

Pack Light - To enjoy a whale watching cruise, you don’t have to pack like you are climbing Mt. Everest. Most of the items suggested can be worn or placed in pockets of your jacket. You want to have everything you need but not have to lug a bag around with you.

With a little bit of preparation, you can assure that your experience is a great one. You are in for a wonderful adventure. Thank you for choosing us for your destination for Southern California whale watching.
