Southern California Whale Watching

A Description of Your Southern California Whale Watching Adventure

When you choose Harbor Breeze for your Southern California whale watching experience, you will always leave with a fantastic experience and a better education about whales, dolphins and other marine life. Our cruises last from approximately two to two and a half hours. During this time you will have the opportunity to view incredible sea life in its natural habitat. While the best way to enjoy the adventure is by trying it, here is a description of what one of our whale watching tours is like.

Since our cruises are usually at capacity, you will be enjoying your experience with many other people. However, you will be comfortable and have plenty of room to move around. Since our boats are specifically designed for whale watching, we have numerous vantage points that offer great viewing as well as photo opportunities.

15 Minute Ride Out of Harbor Full of Area Landmarks

Once we depart, we will begin to make our trek out of the Long Beach Harbor. You will be able to see such area landmarks as the Queen Mary, Long Beach Lighthouse, The Long Beach Harbor as well as spectacular views of the downtown skyline. The trip from the dock to the open waters of the Pacific takes about 15 minutes. There is information on the internet that says the trip takes more than an hour just to get past the breakwater. This is entirely false. Our boats have some of the fastest cruising speeds in the industry and are able to cover more ground than the competition.

As we reach open water, we begin the search for whales and other marine life. While cruising, it is not uncommon to see pods of dolphins following the boat and swimming and jumping along the bow. These pods can have up to 500 to even 1000 dolphins. If you have a steady hand, you will have the opportunity to take lots of good photos.

As we get nearer the viewing areas, you will need to keep your eyes open. Make sure to look for water spouts. These spouts are the whales coming up to the surface to breath. The staff will keep you informed of any sightings or breaches but you may very well be the person who spots a whale. Make sure to let the others know so they can view. There are many times when you will see more than one whale together so always keep your eyes open. Also, during the tour, a biologist from the Aquarium of the Pacific will be onboard telling you about the whales you are viewing, from what they eat, size and other characteristics and behaviors. Feel free to ask lots of questions.

Experience the Thrill For Yourself

Before you know it, it is time to make the trek back to the harbor and conclude the tour. It is amazing how fast the time flies. As we journey back to the harbor, it is not uncommon to see numerous harbor seals, sea lions and other marine life. Another misconception is that the harbor and ocean around the harbor is polluted and that there is no marine life. This is another fallacy. These waters are some of the most nutrient dense in the area and are full of marine life.

While this description doesn’t do our whale watching tours justice, it will at least give you a bit of an idea of what it is like on one of our tours. We look forward to making your Southern California whale watching experience a memorable one.
